In their excellent 50-year history of the Blue Angels, Veronico and Fritze use Boss Bill Wheat’s words to explain the move from the Tiger to the McDonnell Douglas F4J Phantom II: “‘We had heard the Air Force was going to get them.’ Wheat’s argument was that the Phantom was designed for the Navy.” Apparently, that made sense to the Navy, and Wheat got his wish in six Phantoms from NAS Oceana. Here, the 1972 team poses in front of the Phantom.

The ever-expanding maintenance team is in front of its Phantom. One of the biggest reasons for the change to the Phantom was that the Tiger was being phased out and would not be supported.
